Isabella Mongelli – Artist In Residence

Splendor Solis to Dodo Resurrection

Milan

Ripa di Porta Ticinese 83

29.01.2020 - 27.02.2020

Isabella Mongelli is the first artist in residence at Combo in 2020. Splendor Solis to Dodo Resurrection is an experimental project realized in the context of a four-week residency at Combo in Milan. The artist presents two performances that give a name to the whole project – at the same time marking the beginning and the end of the residency. Starting from Splendor Solis the artist works on the realization of Dodo Resurrection, an unreleased performance conceived as a sequel of Splendor Solis. During the residency period Mongelli inhabits the glass cube in an unusual way, using the room as an artist studio, scattering traces – both material and immaterial – in different moments and places inside Combo, in the communal areas and through a plurality of media, such as the Radio and Instagram.

Splendor Solis

Splendor Solis is part of a trilogy of performances also including Delphi Situations and Dodo Resurrection. It is a performance and an installation project and it belongs to the realm of the visionary, not because it privileges fantasy as an escape from reality, but because of its precise and daring choice of color, magic and mannerism. It emphasizes the present as a pool of elements that should not be commented on, but that push beyond, elsewhere. Splendor Solis brings together things in a flow of non-sense miniatures. It is unprecedented and baroque. In this performance the Baroque is a formal, conceptual and spiritual fact. The objects of vision are: the sun, the Dodo’s extinction in the seventeenth century, Russian sunsets and M. Rothko as he contemplates them before emigrating to America, colonial forces leading to extinctions, rising temperatures worldwide and human being, the search for truth, horizontal and vertical dimensions that meet in the fold, divination, premonition, the crocodile, dreams. There’s a collaboration in the texts with the Anthropologist Michael Taussig about global meltdown, the oscillations of temperature and so the body oscillations. The way all this comes together is informal in character – it spreads in a space of becoming. Splendor Solis is inspired by the Baroque and sees it as an encouragement to seek truth in hermeticism and invented ephemeral sets that emerge out of mimesis and the transference of properties from one thing to another.

Dodo Resurrection

Dodo Resurrection is the last chapter of the Splendor Solis trilogy. In an atmosphere illuminated by a sinister sun the Dodo rises again among the ruins of Pompei, and a series of endeavours will lead him to conquer the Golden Fleece so that he will finally fly. Animated by the metamorphosis, a sense of loss of an original natural state and by an heroicomic spirit, the Dodo will try the way of adaptation intended as “the strong fortitude of every strength”. Moving from an unrestrained sense of otherness, the performance reflects on adaptation, mimesis and the new sense of transcendence given by the environment in which we live, a reality which is also (completely) science fiction. This work drives Isabella Mongelli’s research into the use of performance as a device that facilitates thought and encounter, discouraging voyeurism in favor of participation and the creation of an active and visible thinking.
