Chiara Baldini presents 'The danced Maenads: between possession and revolution'. Maenads have been a part of the Dionysian imagination since at least the eighth century B.C., and since then they have never ceased to capture the imagination of painters, poets, as well as those concerned with dance, altered states of consciousness, and anyone who approaches ancient Greek history.
Groups of women venturing alone to the top of mountains, strong in their knowledge of the healing power of plants and psychotropic mushrooms, skilled in the use of the frame drum and its haunting, pressing rhythms, adept at moving their bodies according to ancestral dictates, unrestrained, uninhibited, but with calculated ecstatic wisdom... until they become more fawn than woman, more divine than human, more wise than mad, and possessed, yes, but by an androgynous god far more ancient than the patriarchal one.

⟡ Chiara Baldini, originally from Florence, lives, studies, works, dances and plays since 2010 in Portugal. She devotes herself to classical studies especially in relation to the ecstatic practices of the Greeks and Romans. She edited the anthology collection
"Psychedelic Mysteries of the Feminine". She passionately researches the cult of Dionysus in her PhD at California Institute of Integral Studies, as well as playing as DJ Clandestine.
